Strolling Broadway Market, A Must-See Destination in London

What is Broadway Market?

Broadway Market is a bustling street in East London known for its famous market, also of the same name. Located in the borough of Hackney, Broadway Market stretches the entire road from Regent’s Canal to London Fields and can be accessed via Bethnal Green, on the Central Line, which is a 15-minute walk away. This historical street is around the corner from Columbia Road Flower Market, one of the oldest markets in the country, which I also had the great pleasure of exploring.

Every Saturday, from 9 am until 5 pm, Broadway Market is filled with lively street vendors selling delicious food, clothes, and unique handmade gifts. You can pick up freshly baked bread, exquisite coffee, artisan cheeses, delectable desserts, organic vegetables, and more. During the warmer months, the market becomes increasingly busy so if you prefer to avoid crowds, arrive on the earlier side. Locals and tourists alike flock to Broadway Market, so come prepared to experience big energy.

What I Ate at Broadway Market

I believe an excellent way to get acquainted with a country’s diverse culinary offerings is to visit one of its popular markets. While strolling Broadway Market I had the chance to indulge in fluffy meringues crafted by Meringue Girls and nosh on some wildly good Scotch eggs by Finest Fayre.

The neighborhood surrounding Broadway Market also had a wide selection of restaurants including pubs, delis, cafés, and bakeries. I stopped in my tracks to witness a Turkish woman at Saray Broadway Café rolling out a two-foot-wide dough that would be used to make Gözleme, a perfect afternoon snack stuffed with delicious fillings like spinach, cheese, and potato. At El Ganso, I devoured life-altering Spanish tapas while sipping on wines of the Mediterranean. It was an experience so great that I asked out loud, should I move to London?

For daily fresh bread and elevated coffee, Pavilion Bakery was a delight. You can always anticipate a line but it’s worth the wait. If you come on Saturday, grab a loaf and pair it with some cheese from the Market and have yourself a little picnic. If you’re like me and appreciate experiencing as many coffee shops as can, make sure to also stop by Climpson & Sons, cherished for their specialty roasts.
